OpenVPX Interoperability for Rugged Signal Processing Systems

OpenVPX interoperability helps system designers combine commercial off-the-shelf modules, backplanes, and chassis into rugged signal processing systems without relying on proprietary board-to-board connectivity. Early VPX systems offered high bandwidth and rugged performance, but variations in module signal types, pinouts, power, and cooling often made integration across multiple vendors difficult.

The ANSI/VITA 65 OpenVPX framework addresses these challenges by defining standardized module profiles, slot profiles, backplane profiles, development chassis profiles, and power profiles. This framework makes it easier for system integrators to match compatible OpenVPX modules with the appropriate backplanes and chassis while maintaining the high-bandwidth data transfer required for demanding signal processing applications.

The white paper also examines OpenVPX development chassis requirements, including air- and conduction-cooled configurations, as well as the power and cooling demands associated with modern VPX modules. Standardized OpenVPX backplanes support multiple topologies and fabric planes, helping designers create interoperable COTS systems while reducing custom integration work.

For signal processing applications, the paper explores common 3U and 6U module profiles, PCI Express and Serial RapidIO fabric protocols, compatible backplane profiles, and the importance of high-bandwidth data, expansion, and control planes. The availability of compliant COTS OpenVPX modules, chassis, and backplanes gives integrators a faster path from system architecture through prototyping and deployment.
